Term Abroad

The opportunity came up for someone to study abroad in Calgary, Canada at Mount Royal University so I spent the second term of Second Year out in Canada. I was studying Interior Design out there, the same as the UK, however I found that they spend more time on the Architectural workings of a building instead of just the colour scheme and the visual design. This took me a while to get to grips with their way of teaching, for example they gave multiple pieces of work each week due in the following week rather than being given 3 projects at the start of the term and then having the whole time to complete them, this kept me more focused as we had imminent deadlines all the time. The lecture style was also very different it ended up being a bit like being back at school, 5 days a week, 8am-late in the studio rather than just a few hours a week like the UK.

This experience has given me much more of an insight into how buildings are actually constructed from start to finish including all of the design elements. Aside from the course it gave me independence in a new country and I had the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and experience new cultures, it grew my confidence hugely.
