This project asked us to change the existing Above Bar Church, Southampton which is located on the high street into an Apart-Hotel. We worked together with the company Layrd to complete this as a live project in collaboration with them. The first floor had to have up to 6 Apart-Hotel rooms and the ground floor could be turned into anything but had to have part of it open to the public.
My proposal is a gym/spa with Apart-Hotel rooms upstairs. The ground floor will be a small gym with a spa attached and will be opened up to public membership. This element of the building is vital as the gym equipment such as exercise bikes, rowing machines and running machines will be used to power the building. The first and second floor will mirror each other in their layout and materiality. Each floor will consist of 3 double rooms, each with an ensuite, a kitchenette and small seating area. But each floor will also have a family room which will consist of a twin room, a double room, an ensuite, a kitchenette, dining area and a living space. The target users will be those coming to stay in Southampton for short stays with the potential for longer more permanent stays for those who need it for longer. Using the RIBA Sustainable Outcomes I have chosen Net-Zero Carbon Emissions
to tackle for this Apart-hotel.
